If this card was still legal in any format, even basic Swamps would be $1. It would be the only viable deck archetype.

This card is the blackest of the black. D'yknow why? It reaches thru the fourth wall and grabs you by the face.
"Hey budz, you wanna draw 7 cards for 1 mana?"
Yeah! You want me to sac a creature? Pay life? Mill my library? Exile my graveyard?
"No, John Q Public (gasp!), I want you to ante your topdeck."
Also, like dude above me said, this is an automatic 4-of in Shandalar.

I would love to play this Shandalar game you guys keep talking about. 4 Contracts from Below in my deck? Jeez. If ante games were commonplace and you could actually use this card, it would soon become clear that Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall and Yawgmoth's Will all put together can't touch this thing.

Draw 7 cards for B, you might as well ante another card too, because the advantage is almost enough to win you the game in older formats.

This card was SO powerful. At first nobody played with it because they didn't want to chance losing two cards to ante but eventually we realized that drawing seven cards--while your opponent got none, unlike Wheel of Fortune or Time Twister--all but assured a win (4 of these with 4 Ancestral Recall, 4 Time Walk, and 4 Braingeyser was some serious card advantage).

The most powerful card in the entire game, bar none. Well, except that it's unplayable in every format and even if you can use it you risk losing one of your cards forever.

Useless unless you have people around still playing for ante.

One of the most powerful cards ever printed, however the ante aspect of the card renders it useless in every format...

Just your standard one mana draw seven. Move along, nothing to see here.
