One should note that, at the time, death grip and lifeforce were both in the latest coreset. At least douse is in a color that is actually supposed to counter spells! And although it's less color intensive, it also starts working a turn later. Death grip and lifeforce would lock out your opponent starting turn 3.

Ho-lee crap. Did Wizards used to hate red, or what? I know RDW can be fast, but what options does it have when the opponent can counter literally *any* red spell (you know, barring Split Second and "can't be countered") for two mana, starting as early as turn four? At that point, all the blue player needs to do is sit there with mana open, possibly bouncing or otherwise removing the early red creatures already on the field!

This is one of my favorite things to pull with my Zur the Enchanter EDH deck when playing against decks with any Red in them. This + Absolute Law = very angry Red players. Nasty and mean? Sure. But isn't that what EDH is all about? Everybody is out to find the combo that wins the game. This just happens to be one of the more annoying ones for red decks.

And I'm pretty sure most of those who call this card cheap and underhanded are just the ones who hate everything about Blue. Yet they would have no hesitation in playing a card for 1Red that completely screws up a Blue deck.

I really like the way this card works with Painter's Servant and Mind Bend. The activation cost is also friendlier to multicolor decks than similar cards (like Deathgrip).

Ahh, the good old days of interrupts. This card came out in October of 1998 and by the time Mercadian Masques came out in September of the next year interrupts had become permanently obsolete. In fact, it was the Sixth Edition overhaul in April of 1999 that officially signed the death certificate for interrupts along with the introduction of the stack.

This is one of the most mean cards I have ever seen. Obviously it is amazing against a red deck, but you would have to be from the dregs of society and a cheapskate to use in casual play.

This and Blind Seer. Throw in Training Grounds or Heartstone and you can essentially cast Counterspell as many times as you want. Pretty mean.

Vodalian Mystic can help you lock a game down with this, if you don't have a Painter's Servant.
