These kinds of artifacts (Iron Star was another that comes to mind) used to get annoying for opponents during the mid-game. With enough mana to spare for life gain, you can undo much of the damage your opponent does. However, considering how fast Magic is now, this card has little use -- I mean, games can end by turn 3 nowadays.

So this is like a ramped-up version of Wurm's Tooth? Instead of just a flat 1 life, it's equal to the mana you're willing to spend, for 1 instead of 2? This is a really good card, not a measly 1.823 stars!
