This was the very first creature to kill me in my first game of Magic. We had no idea what we were doing so we shuffled up our entire collections (about 250 cards each) and played a game with 100 life. But the LoTP took me down with his crazy Flample 7/7-ness.

This is the card that made me want to start playing this game. First, I just love saying "Lord of the Pit." Then there's the artwork... nothing like it, man. As far as the suicide aspect, dying to this thing because I wasn't able to control it was so flavorful that it was almost ok. I mean, I started playing D&D/AD&D back in 81, so I got that if you summoned a demon and screwed around with it, you'd die. No cacodemon spells here. And when I didn't die, but used my summoned fiend to crush my opponent? All was right with the world.
This card isn't about what is better and what is worse. This card is about, well, this card. And it has to be a 5/5, because this is Magic, and it's a Lord of the Pit.

Meh... Not that good of a card, paying seven for a 7/7 flyer trampler i guess they thought would be too good, so they added the sacrificing thing. I wouldn't put this in a deck, maby if it cost a bit less possibly five, or even six, but not seven mana

Time and power creep has not been kind to this guy. Still, in the old days of magic, he was almost unstoppable if you could get him into play. And he's still okay even today, especially with all of the token creation cards out there now.

Despite all this guy's flaws, I still like him. He is huge, even today, and scary. The upkeep is a nightmare, but at least he can attack even if he does hit you, and his casting cost is not too absurd. Not viable in much of any format, but still... I sort of miss seeing this huge thing flying around, smashing faces.

Lord of the board. There was a time when this was an even more exciting rare to open in a booster pack than Black Lotus...
