This card was great in mirrodin-Kamigawa standard, killed Jitte, Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Light and Shadow, all of which were very popular at the time.

Bludgeon Brawl and Liquimetal Coating just found a new buddy. (Even just the Brawl is pretty nice)

Umezawa's Jitte is powerful enough to warrant a hate-card. However, for this card to work, there has to be a creature to equip it to. Most people who played the Jitte kept counters on the Jitte until the last minute. Even if someone gets in a meager two hits with an equipped creature, the Jitte was capable of killing up to four X/1s, or a single X/4, or what have you. The main design flaw in Manriki-Gusari was its inability to cope with a Jitte that was already active; Jitte is more than capable of sniping creatures in response to Gusari's equip cost.

very useful ability if your opponent uses equipment, and the pump is decent on it's own. definitely worth taking a look at.

This is probably my favorite piece of equipment. Most people overlook it because of Umezawa's Jitte, and the manriki-gusari was printed to try and reduce the power of that card (though it was rather ineffectual, since the jitte could kill creatures before the manriki could equip them and then try and destroy the jitte).
However, as a stand alone equipment, it has the best static boost for costing only to equip, which I find really convenient. When you add the fact that it can repeatedly destroy equipment as long as you've got a creature to tap, it really does a lot for me in my games.
It's not overpowered, but strong and versatile, since having a moveable, reusable, colorless holy strength isn't bad for an uncommon, and it get's rid of some of the most annoying cards in the game.
Behemoth Sledge, Loxodom Warhammer, Jitte, the Mirrodin Swords, Skull Clamp, and all those other annoying equipment I see far too much of are enough to justify playing Mariki-Gusar... (see all)

Love it. The art, the boost, the effect. It's too bad I don't have any of em.

Why not "gain control of target equipment"? (With a little more cost, obviously.)
