Yeah, kind of strange that they didn't just simply reprint them...
Maybe for creature type reasons, although i don't exactly remember whether the Stampeding WIldebeests used to be Antelopes only back then...and even then, there shouldn't have been a big problem changing it.
Edit (Since 8/6/2009): Duh yeah, makes sense A3Kitsune :P
But what doesn't make sense to me though is the fact that they made a functional reprint of this instead of trying something else - it was part of a horizontal cycle afterall (Eiganjo Free-Riders, Trusted Advisor, Skull Collector, Oni of Wild Places, and this. They could for example have made it a 3/2 trampler for with that trigger instead, which would have been far more interesting.

@Mode:
The Wildebeests wern't reprinted because of flavor reasons. Kamigawa is a J a p a n e s e setting, Wildebeests are A f r i c a n creatures.

There are two versions of this same card for a reason - EDH. Getting a 4 drop 5/4 trample with the stipulation of having to return a green creature to hand is actually AMAZING with come into play effects. Bounce any of these BAMF creature cards every turn: Elvish Visionary, Eternal Witness, Obstinate Baloth, Acidic Slime, Tornado Elemental, Myojin of Life's Web, etc.

Mode, that would be the same P/T, cost, and Trample ability as Garruk's Companion, so that wouldn't happen.
Funny, it didn't occur to me that The companion came long after Kamigawa.

Cast Mwonvuli Beast Tracker and fetch this. Next turn and every turn after keep fetching stuff. Probably important to mention I'd be using these in a Call of the Wild deck.

The only difference between this and the Wildebeests is the name. They even share the same creature types.
