You actually cant gain take advantage of the ability without your opponent knowing about it beforehand. This has to be on the field before they declare attackers or the ability does not trigger. And if this guys out, they can just choose not to attack. This might actually be a design flaw, since his fox offering wants you to cast him on their turn.

Then again, this might be what the designers intended. Cast him the phase before declare attackers, and now you just gave there aggro deck a tough decision. If they dont swing, then its mission accomplished for the turn. If they do, take something out and null the attack. But it might be more beneficial to flash him in as a blocker, depending if something must be taken out or not.

Thats enough theory crafting for today, and I am sure the designers knew what they were doing with this guy. Anyways, for its time it had a fantastic cost + body, a decent ability, and a way to cheat it out for far less, giving it flash. All things considered, in... (see all)

Ugly? He's not supposed to catch your eye from across the room and seduce you with a wink.
He's a giant, fox-devouring spirit. And he looks cool as mess.

I think this is the weakest of the patrons. It does not necessarily work well with the Kitsune cards available either.

It's like you have Absorb 1, plus some lifegain when you attack. Nice.

A friend of mine actually used this to good effect at a tournament once. The meta was overrun with white weenie decks, so his counter deck used Kitsune Blademaster and a couple of other cards to force the decks to over commit, and then followed up with Wrath of God. Since it had the blademasters and some other foxes (maybe 8.5 tails or Samurai of the Pale Curtain? I can't remember exactly) he threw this in. Could easily come down on turn four, and a white weenie deck really can't deal with having its creatures deal 1 less damage each.

What its not that great of a main ability, I mean all it is is a more kill-able Righteous Cause. I would rather play a Congregate
