Man, are the akki ever weird-looking - still, they are distinctive, so that's gotta be a point in their favour.
As far as goblins for go, they're pretty low on the totem pole, but I wouldn't say they're useless. For a hyper-aggressive deck (sligh, for example, as Maraxas-of-Keld pointed out), you're not gonna care about losing your lands if it means your opponent is dead. The ability doesn't actually cost any mana, which is certainly a plus - lets you Lightning Bolt 'em in the face and then sac the mountain for bonus damage, if your guy is unblocked!

Only really useful as a 1/1 early on and as a 3/1 if he is finishing a foe off, sacrificing your first land won't help very much early on.
