2011 has traded him out for Maritime Guard, which works a little better, Soldier is a more fitting creature type then Wizard for a 1/3 with no abilities.

Vanilla creatures tend to have a lot more room for flavour text, and this guy (interestingly enough) has different flavour text on each of his printings.
Having said that, gaining knowledge from watching nature really feels more 
than 
, to me. I don't care for vanilla wizards, personally - vanilla creatures are often kind of "blah", and the wizard tribe really feels like it should have some kind of ability attached to it.
