Solid Vanilla creature that breaks even = AT LEAST 3 stars. This even gets support from Elephant Graveyard.

Why?
When Nessian Courser and Centaur Courser exist{/quote

Those did not exist when Tempest was released. Wizards have gradually increased the strength of creatures since the first few sets, when even the strongest creatures used to be weak compared to game-bending artifacts, instants and sorceries. Trained Armodon's printing in Tempest represents one of those ticks in power level, a 3/3 for 3cmc with no drawback other than double Green. The Nessian Courser represents the logical next step in careful power creep, same creature with lesser color requirement. The functional reprint in M10 suggests that Wizards still thinks this an appropriate power level.
Funny though that Tarmogoyf saw print in the same set as the Courser. Not so careful there...

5/5 for the flavor text alone

Before Armadons are trained, they just float around freely.

I love non-jokey humorous flavor text like this.

Merely average creature, however. In a world where we have Leatherback Baloth, this guy isn't good for much but limited, unless it's all you have. In that case, it does its job and it does it well. Other cards just do it better if you have them.

It irks me that this is rated so low. New players are spoiled and expect stuff like Wooly Thoctar for 3 mana. Back when this card was released, Hill Giant was still the norm, and this was the first step Wizards took towards definitively making vanilla creatures stronger.

This is an underrated card. It's cheap and tough, two qualities that vanilla creatures really lack nowadays.

And now we also have Kalonian Tusker. This thing is so obsolete I bet it's reminiscent for the telegraph.
