I used to like these things in my early days. Until i discovered that they don't do a whole lot. I would rather just have another type of counterspell in this slot if I was playing blue anyway.

If you play this... not good. Against blue, you don't need lifegain - if they're damaging you, you're going to die eventually and there's nothing you can do about it except force them to use their counterspells. If you're playing blue, just play a counterspell and counter a creature.

Exactly; I completely agree with this. Apply this message to every card that only gains you life.

As others said, lifegain doesn't win you games, and if you are playing blue, the net effect on your life of countering even a relatively small creature would outweigh the effect of the 1-3 life you are going to gain each turn with this. With the exceptions of Serra Avatar, Celestial Convergence, Ajani's Pridemate or Felidar Sovereign life gain won't be winning you any games. You may note all the cards I mentioned are white. Go figure.

Not a lot of blue lifegain cards, hard to believe this is only a little over 2/5. Counters are good, but something like this is a nice little background card to have.
