@theonlymoocow - In an Animar, Soul of Elements EDH deck. It's realistic to play him for only a few colorless mana or totally free. Plus you won't be playing too many non-creature spells in said deck, so he really only hoses your opponents.

It costs {9}, which means you'll need some alternate method to get him into play if you're going to combo with him. I recommend Tinker. Then you could just go with a very creature-heavy deck that can negate or destroy other creatures. You and the Gargoyle will be pretty much safe from removal (barring an unfortunate Acidic Slime, but you can't stop everything) and most of their hand will probably be useless, so with some half-decent creatures you should be able to just pressure the opponent into submission.
