Things that absorb light wouldn't reflect it, and as vision functions by detecting reflected light the gargoyle would in fact appear black.

Since it only counters noncreature spells and costs no colored mana, I could definitely see him in a Animar EDH-deck. Animar deck should be able to cover most of their needs in removals and effects through creatures, and with the added bonus of reducing the cost of this card greatly . This guy could theoretically delay a sweeper as well, since your opponent will have to waste a spell to get it through, and thus keeping Animar healthy for a little while longer.

this, omen machine, rule of law/arcane labotory. Or Ethersworn canonist to keep to the artifact theme and allow you to play spells.
