It looks like some kind of machine is escape through his mouth and reading his spellbook.
Maybe it was planted in the form of a pill hidden in food, and then grew itself and busted out at the right moment, right when the mage was reading his most valuable information.
But then again, why didnt the nanobots just invade the mages eye sockets? Could have gained the information without being seen that way. But perhaps the draw is prevented because the scholar is also killed in the process :P
