What's not to love?
Early game you can take the two damage to fix your mana base, and late game you don't have to. Very potent mana fixing, for sure.

$12 Dollars for an extremely solid as-in-good-for-as-long-you-play-Magic land isn't that steep.
I mean that all the Lands that really make/break certain Legacy, Vintage, and Commander decks frequently start the bidding at $50, and go up to $200-$300. Especially in Commander, where foil blingy-ness is a more relevant factor and the tiny number of Super Duper Lands with Super Ultra Rare Promos:
Mutavault, Wasteland, Maze of Ith, Library of Alexandria, and Bazaar of Baghdad being the most powerful examples, but there are a score and then some of lands that fit right in that $25-$50 class of Staple Rares.
$12 for a land in Standard is annoying, for Modern it's neither cheap nor expensive- just about normal.

The only thing bad about the shocklands is the price tag. $12 for a land is kinda steep.
