Flying and first strike are greats if you need to keep a creature to defend . Maybe in a green deck ?

this is rated low because Spikes hate cards that aren't blatantly overpowered.(Baneslayer Angel, O-ring.)

This card is amazing. Why its being rated so low, god only knows. If you just want a good blocker because your opponent is up on creatures at the moment, then take your 7/7 and make it a flyer/First strike to give you time. 4/5

Walls defend anyway, and Rolling Stones gets rid of defender whether there is one instance of it or two.

In the right deck, having defender is not a bad thing. Stalwart Shield-Bearers will boost whatever this is equipped to, Perimeter Captain has lifegain, Wakestone Gargoyle allows anything with defender to attack, Overgrown Battlement will net you more mana, it allows Vent Sentinel to deal more damage etc. I am sure there are more examples to make this more powerful, but those interact directly with defender. As mentioned earlier, there is no reason not to just make a creature a tough nut to crack and just switch it to something else if an opportunity to attack presents itself.

1CMC, 2 to Equip, and it makes your creature a whole heck of a lot more deadly.
