Even if you can filter arbitrary amounts of mana into it, it's too obvious an option to warrant inclusion by the kind of Johnnies who (most likely) would be the ones looking to do such a thing.
EDIT: Whoops, thought it was a Poly Artifact for some reason! Damn, then this is even worse than I thought!

It was bad even back those days.
However, have you noticed that there is a face in the ring's embedded stone?

pretty awesome that early designers thought 4 damage was totally worth 16 mana. Now, 16 mana gets you a giant 15/15 flying annihilating death machine with protection from colored spells, take your pick.

Almost strictly worse than Tower of Calamities.

One of the few repeatable colorless sources of Direct damage, however the cost is so great that it is unusable, save 8-Post and Urzatron decks, who wouldn't run it anyway...

Overcosted for what it does, though back in the day of casual play, I suspect this ring was reasonably dangerous in long games.

Tower of Eons is much better.

This cards value slightly increased with Master Transmuter and March of the machines but even cutting the cost in half it's still pricey! I had fun in casual matches with it though. Of course we played a house rule where turn 1 you could play up to 8 lands so it was poss to play this turn 2, but likely around turn 4 or 5.

Tower of Calamities please.
Also, any target? Really, printers? Any target? So I can do 8 damage to a Jihad or a Bazaar of Baghdad? How?
