Omni8000 is right, as tower of calamities can do damage to only creatures, whereas this can target players as well.

@omni8000 There's no "almost" to it. If you're referring to the tap in the activation of Tower of Calamities, remember that back in the day, "Mono Artifact" meant that you tap it to activate it. So even with infinite mana, Tower of Calamities still does more damage than this card.

Edit: Ah, right, this can target players. Nevermind, then.
