The clause got lost when it was reprinted in sixth. When the printed wordings are different from one another, they (usually) go with the newest.

Hey - where did the clause about the carpet dying with the creature go? It's not in the present oracle text. It's not the end of the world that it isn't on there (it's not like Flying Carpet is going to break any format), but it is curious that it was ommitted. Wizards has wanted to get all the cards as close to their original intented printing as possible, so where'd that sentence go?

Conceptually, I love cards like this. Ferropede and Power Matrix are other examples of a color ability in a colorless card. However, I'd just use Whispersilk Cloak.
Even if you were being very irresponsible with your mana, you'd grant a better version of Evasion and Shroud every turn for the same "equip" cost. And it costs less mana to play the first time.
Of course, depending on your deck build, this could be more flavorful. As a casual player, that is really important to me.

Flying was a much bigger deal back then. Losing the carpet when the creature dies is a rough drawback, too. In the artwork the carpet is fine without a passenger!

A Semi-Useful utility artifact, good in limited, not the best in constructed, grants temporary evasion for a decent cost...although it probably could cost 1 to activate...
