Obviously an experimental card since they had no idea how to price what amounts to lifelink back then. Like most life-gain effects, they vastly overestimated its power. He'd have been fun at B cost.

Yeah, he's a very good example how lifelink-like effects developed. Similar to death touch, they're rather treated like flying, trample or first strike these days.

@Elysiume - In this case I think power creep is a beautiful thing. A game where it takes that long to get out a 1/1 with only one ability would be rather slow and boring.

Stygimoloch is right, what was Wizards thinking? Didn't they know that 15 years later they would print Nip Gwyllion and ruin this guy's niche in the magic world? Those fools!

This was the first card printed with lifelink, so they were unsure on how to effectively cost it...I have used this card in the past, however...

This is not a lifelink creature, very similar but there are small differences in how the ability works.

Power creep is an ugly thing.

Eh, rather expensive for a 1/1 lifelink, especially considering it's on-colour for black. Just look at Nip Gwyllion...
