Think about it this way: It makes any land a painland.

If you pay it you don't get to use that mana, but if you don't, you pay one life for that mana. So if you know you need that mana take the damage.

Generally speaking, don't name anything in a game "asp" unless you want jokes made about it.

Oh, as for the creature, a 1/1 green creature for G that comes with an annoying ability worked well back then.

A great green one-drop, this card can cause problems in the early game, often screwing with a player's mana curve...

Nafs, incidentally, means breath. So you have to pay mana to hyperventilate, I guess.
