In case people can't make sense of the (convoluted) flavor text, seven wives made seven pies, which means that each wife made seven pies. Since each pie is made from 7 apples, each wife gets 49 broken bones. Ouch.

The problem here is that trees want their apples to be eaten; it's their way of spreading their seeds. When a creature eats an apple, the tree's seeds survive, and are eventually crapped out by that creature someplace far from where the seed has to compete with its parent.
