Yeah, it's not great. The body is small for the cost and the ability is quite meh as your opponent generally has a substantially smaller hand on turn 5 than turn 1. There's some combos with it though.

3/5 for combo potential :D

Use in your Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker EDH to make your opponent discard 3 cards each turn.

Pretty sure it isn't sorcery speed. Just has to be on your turn, so you can activate his ability anytime you could play an instant on YOUR turn. In other words, you could combo off before passing priority. They could still cast their kill spell, but you would already have their hand. Fair trade in my opinion.

P.s. necrotic ooze, grim poppet, and cinderhaze wretch = one sided board wipe and hand destruction (give it haste and your golden Thornling)

Edit: I still prefer devoted druid for the combo.

Swing with this guy.... if they let it through and you don't want to deal 3... cast Subdue targetting Cinderhaze Wretch... which will make it a 3/7.... that should let you get rid of an opponent's hand pretty quickly. Also, elemental and shaman are both relevant creature types... though {B} isn't the best colour for either...
