id just throw it in a deck if you need more counters, there arnt very many hard counters out there and this is one of the closest. i agree i would in most situations perfer a counterspell or even a cancel but having a blocker can be usefull too.

This guy might not be "as good as" cancel on its own, but can be a little nasty once combined with some kind of repeatable ressurection like Debtor's knell or mass ressurections like Living Death.
Sure, you *Could* ress a game ender instead, but that isn't as fun ;)

You play this instead of counterspell or cancel so you have a counterspell later even when your mana is tapped out. At worst you force someone to blow their removal (if they even have any) on your 3 CMC creature. At best it is a visible force of will. Severely underrated. I learned the hard way when playing against someone with this card and I was locked out of playing anything big.

Alone it is one of worse counterpells with big drawback of having to pay mana one turn earlier than it can be used.
However in combination with Æther Vial and Fervor it can be even better than famous Force of Will.

Everybody is looking at this card as just another counterspell, forgetting that there are advantages to this card being a creature card instead of an instant.

For one, you can make copies of it through various means like Soul Foundry. Secondly, there are many instances where sacrificing a creature may be beneficial, such as with Proper Burial. Third, cards like Remembrance and Guiding Spirit (especially in combination) remove alot of the negative aspects of sacrificing a creature. Lastly, although it'd have summoning sickness on the first turn, with Aluren this is a free counterspell.

This is not a good general purpose counterspell, but in the right deck this can actually be an above average one.

Fool's Demise can get annoying with this.

An underrated card. Although it usually only makes for mediocre or very situational use, it can be very useful when copied over and over again. Followed Footsteps on this card entirely won me a game all on it's own. I had about 5 extra copies in the last few turns before the final attack.
