I was told the formula for costing vanilla dorks was "power + toughness should not exceed CMC"

This should have been 4.

I understand that most cards cannot be tournament worthy, and I understand that draft formats need basic, utility cards, but come on - junk like this was barely playable when the game first game out. Give it something - anything! - to make it more than an Ironroot Treefolk that showed up over 15 years too late to the party.

Making the cost 3GreenGreen rather than 4Green gives it deathtouch... and becomes greater.
