This can pretty easily 2 for 1, and depending on what your opponent is running, it can even be a 3 for 1. At the cheap price of giving your opponent 5 life. The only BAD thing about this card is the tough mana cost, not the 5 life.
I'm pretty sure that if this was reprinted in alara, every naya deck would at least sideboard this. It's too flexible NOT to.

Pretty sure if this had been printed in Alara it would give you the five life instead.

false cure, an extra two black mana and you just doled out 5 damage to creatures and dealt 5 damage to a player, or dealt 10 damage to a player.

Pretty insane draft pick, and viable cube card.

This card is good because of its versatility, not because it can combo with other spells for nastiness (that is just a side bonus). Just by itself it can be a 5-for-1 in the best circumstances (usually multiplayer, also early-game EDH), and remember, folks: lifegain sucks. I hate saying that because it's cliche, but most people would very willingly give an opponent 5 life to get card/board advantage like this card can give you. It isn't the most powerful card out there - not by a longshot - but it gets the job done.

Might work well with some sort of infect.
