As someone who tried playing a deathtouch-heavy deck in an environment ripe with first/ double strike and trample creatures, I can say that this is definitely better than deathtouch in almost every way. If I'm reading it right, it destroys the creature before combat damage is even dealt.

It's a 1cmc tribal deathtouch in a color that, as you said, lacks creature removal. This can hold off an opponent for a turn or two when you don't have Wrath

What happens when you put an Indestructibility on him?

He does survive if he is indestructible...
So the indestrubility transforms him into a 1/1 Deathtouch...
Maybe an interesting combo... but an expensive one..

This guy's only downside is that he is purely a defensive card. Beyond that, though, he can be combo'd off of in many ways.

To answer Murdershot: yes, you can Unsummon him before his ability resolves and the other creature will still be destroyed. In the same way, you could combo him with Regeneration to make him reusable in a Green or White deck.

As with any basilisk-type card, he also combos with Valor-type cards. While in a Green or White deck a Tangle Asp would be more efficient, this card is still a 1-drop, which means he can be dropped pretty much whenever you want to.

@Elysiume:
How is this worse than deathtouch? Because he gets destroyed when he blocks? He's a freaking 1/1, he'd die to anything that can actually do damage!

Not to mention that deathtouch requires you to damage the enemy. Meaning you can get blocked by a 1/X deathtouch and survive so long as you can prevent the damage or get first/double strike damage in. Loyal Sentry destroys them even if he doesn't do any damage.

And then consider that you could always do something to protect him from being destroyed.

I see Wizards forgot to change the rarity from his Starter 99 counterpart.

Hey, it's like deathtouch, but a lot worse. I guess white is lacking in creature destruction, but it's a pretty lack-luster rare.

hes decent in control, he holds off opponents for a couple of turns. he also kills firststrikers which is very important.

What the hell is up with the art on this version? I prefer even the meh Starter edition art to this.
