this card's real advantage is if you use mana excelleration, rampant growth, shard convergence, obelisks... when used in combination with these things it's a deadly card. so what if you have to pay 8 mama, you could do 5 damage to your opponent and probably kill off anything he even thinks is going to deal damage

Kills Lorwyn merfolk even if X is 1, 2, or 3.
Also this is one of very few effective ways of killing U/B fae.

If you play this in Limited, it will most likely cause you to win. Gives you field advantage AND life advantage.

This card is supposed to clear out chump blockers so you can hit with a super-powerful devourer, such asThunder-Thrash Elder.

I can't believe how low this thing is rated on here. The card is a BOMB in a set of colors that is already laden with bombs.
I mean, you're talking about completely wiping someone's board and killing them in the process.
Powerhouse of a card, even if you're only hitting for 2-3 points of damage.

I am unsure why people are not giving this card higher marks. I run it in my domain deck. Spend the early turns mana fixing with cards like Exploding Borders that also soften the opponent, then wipe their side of the board for 5 or 6. Try it with Cloven Casting. Pay 1 less for the X cost, then copy it. It's fun to blast someone for 7 late game, copy it, then walk in with a 16/16 Apocolypse Hydra that needed a couple of chumpers to get out of the way.
For those that still want to complain that it costs too much, then I'm sure that you haven't had your board wiped yet.

I have it sideboarded simply because my deck has a low mana curve and has a lot of burn/destruction in 4 L. Bolts and 4 Terminates + 4 Colossal Mights for boost. Still a huge card if I ever have to use it.

not really worth it unless you have 6 mana to deal 3 to everything IMO, and by turn 6 you may want to consider playing something a bit more deadly. I dunno, its good, just sort of situational and probably a side board card.

This card ruins games in Limited. If your opponent plays it, you almost certainly lose. It's totally one-sided and there is almost no way to play around it. It doesn't require much creativity to use it effectively, either. At least symmetric Wrath or Pyroclasm effects require you to sandbag your own creatures, possibly tipping off your opponent that something's coming. With Lavalanche, you just play out your dudes normally and then blow out your opponent.
Martial Coup is much the same. If you play it for 7 or more mana, you just win.
Plague Wind was fine since 9 mana is almost prohibitive, even in Limited. Lavalanche can be a blowout at as little as 5 or 6 mana. That's just not fair.
Please stop making cards like this.

Lavalanche is a mini version of Chandra ...
