In a Vampire deck you can use this to grab nocturnus, or even shuffle your deck and grab some other card if the top one on your deck isn't black.

I love this card, its almost always usefull. I like that it costs 4 cmc because that way it reamains balanced.
It is great for geting that perfect card but often this card leaves you unable to play the card you fetched till the next turn, making this cards timing vital. Play it too early or late and you could set your self up to lose.

demonic tutor is imbalanced, and is basically an auto-4 in any deck running black if it wasn't banned/restricted. This is balanced.
I think 4/5 is pretty good for this card. Many control/combo decks with black will run 1-2 copies of this card.

One of my favorite cards. I had the pleasure of using it today against my brother's Jace deck. While this isn't the most graceful or devastating combo ever, it was really fun.
I had used Mutilate plus Sudden Death (targeted at his Denizine of the Deep) to wipe the board of everything- including my Skeletal Vampire which had been given him fits.
Next turn I dropped Undertaker, and two Drudge Skeletons and tutor up a Gorgon Recluse while he's spent the turn trying to rebuild his board position.
So, next turn I use the Undertaker to bring my Skeletal Vampire back, I toss Gorgon Recluse but am able to play her for her madness cost; and then Dark Ritual'd the Vampire back into play (triggering his lovely bats) much to the chagrin of my brother who had managed to burn up every single counterspell in his deck (at th... I always thought this card was really good. I ran four in my Esper Deck. But I realized I was never using them, I always left them on my sideboard. Still good in EDH though. I like to think of it as a "wild card." It can be anything you want it to be. 4*

The difference between this card and other mana intensive tutors is really only one thing: lack of instant speed. While I have played this card in the past, and loved doing so, my exposure to cards like Mystical Teachings has given me insights into why this card isn't so fondly reflected on, nor even considered playable in the competitive Type 2-ish scene.
Mystical Teachings, while less flexible in regards to what it searches for, offers a list of upsides:
It's blue.
It offers card advantage.
You can (and will) do it during your opponent's turn.
It's common, so it's legal in Pauper.
Its flashback cost lets it get played in decks that ditch their whole hand yet somehow generate a lot of black mana, if such decks exist.
It's less color-committed, i.e. {3U} is less difficult than {2BB}.
