Yeah, most situations I'd prefer this over Merchant Scroll, but one card in particular works much better with Merchant Scroll: Echo Mage. In most cases, being able to pay 1UUU to tutor 3 instants to your hand would be more useful than paying UUU to put 3 instants/sorceries on top of your library. In most any other deck though, between being able to search sorceries, instant speed, and being a turn-1 play, I'd say this is the better card.

Pity you have to reveal the card though. I always thought that cards that tutor instants should let you exile the card, then play it as if it were in your hand to keep it hidden from the opponent while still letting them make sure you aren't cheating with your tutors. (Damn that sounds dirty.)
