A common theme among the most hated cards in MTG history is the "return to its owner's hand" mechanic. See also Cyclopean Snare, Rakalite, Saprazzan Raiders, Windscouter, and Zephyr Spirit.
Somewhere in the depths of the FFL, I can only imagine, lies the secret to how to break this return-to-hand mechanic wide open, thus explaining the exorbitant pricing of cards such as this. And until someone figures that secret out, we're apparently going to get cards like this every few years that mystify everyone as to why they exist.

Boomerangs are cool. I refuse utterly to look at this card's mechanics, because it is a boomerang, and it must be cool.
Terible card by the way, but still cool.

Worst rated card in Vintage. You know, I was curious.

This card will go down in history for its legendary uselessness.
UPDATE: I believe this is currently the lowest rated card on Gatherer.

Lol it casts Boomerang on itself. That would be great if you didn't have to pay the {2} for it...

This card is the sole reason Wizards should allow me to rate cards 0.
