Similar to Bonds of Fate but with recursion. And deadlier.

are you kidding me this is a 5/5. it may not look like much but a two cast card that never goes away and helps almost any situation is an incredible thing. disenchants and counter spells only slow it down. it's good in your opening hand and it can make your endgame. for example: your opponent is using gain life and/or few to no creatures? kill him with poison counters. he's got lots of small creatures? take 1 out every turn or 2. he's using big creatures? slap this bad boy on your blocker. when his attacker kills your blocker put it on his now much smaller creature and negate it's damage until it's small enough to kill/dies on it's own. you can put 1 in your deck or you can put 4 in your deck, it's one of the very rare cards that is even better with two on the field. no it isn't a quick kill spell i'll give you that, but it's got enough good combos to be the center of a deck and it never goes away so that deck will be super reliable.

Now, after having this card for a year, I figured a good way to put it to use:
Have it in a Black Aggro EDH deck, with Mirri the Cursed as your general.
Mirri has haste, flying and first strike. Like all the shenanigans that Phyrexian Crusader can pull off, giving her infect is quite deadly.
Not only that, but an aggressive general dies quickly. This cards recycling effect is very useful when this happens, so you can attack with her, probably lose her, and then try it again next turn.
However, Grafted Exoskeleton seems like a better card in this case. The negative counters are really the problem here, rather than sticking on the field (artifacts, are more susceptible to destruction, I believe)
Regardless, it's, overall, mediocre. If the -1/-1 ability wasn't there, then it'd be much more efficient.

Makes me sad to see this card rated so low. It's one of my favorite cards of all time. My favorite use for it is to combo it with Evershrike. As long as Evershrike is in your graveyard, this card makes it a 4/4 flying, infect, flash for 4 black mana. Beyond that, throw it on a Carnifax Demon or use it to target a 1/1 infect equipped with Livewire Lash for cheap poison counters or just throw it on a Phyrexian Obliterator and make your opponent weep. So many uses. I can't rate this card high enough.

O...M...G... protean hydra....i think i need to clean myself up... but seriously tho, yeah, think about it. the -1/-1 counter cancels out the +1/+1 counter and they both leave the monster...now what happens when a +1/+1 counter leaves the hydra? *insert evil laugh here* that's what happens.

Leave it to Wizards to sneak an X-Files reference into the game.
