Oh, I can just see him killing off every 1/1 spirit tokens as long as there's a first spark of death. But yeah, what is stopping people from playing it is its mana cost.
As for the flavor, when you view something as "half empty", you're thinking negative whereas if you think something as "half full", you're thinking positive. In other words, this guy has not lost any hope just yet.

I really like this card, but for 6 mana its far to expensive to be realistically used in any kind of serious play.

I put this guy in my BRG eldrazi deck and he's wicked.
The deck averages 8cmc, so his cost isn't a problem. Plus, he combos with everything eldrazi. sac your drazi tokens, deal 2 damage for each 1 mana, annihilator can also potentially trigger the damage. A card like All is Dust becomes even more ridiculous with this dude out.
Out of this deck, I do find him pretty useless. Total niche card.

Art isn't terrible, but not particularly noteworthy. Flavour text needs work, they tried way too hard. Ability could really be something else in the right deck. I'm thinking lots of tokens, and a fair bit of haste and vigilance for hitting every turn.
Really pricey, though. I couldn't justify for this at any point that it'd be useful.

Infinite Reflection. Make sure you've got a bunch of creatures out.
Then Day of Judgment. 'JUDGEMENT? I'LL SHOW YOU JUDGEMENT BWAHAHAHA'

Dude, the literally the only ruling on this card says the exact opposite of what you're saying. If Rage Thrower goes to the graveyard at the same time as other stuff (such as what happens with a boardwipe) he sees everything die, and triggers accordingly.
Hell, it's the reason he's in my Krenko EDH - creates a lovely little "Damned if you boardwipe, damned if you don't" situation.

Flavour on this guy is delicious, but 6 CMC in red should be buying you a big dragon. Once you get to there, you've already thrown down a lot of your other stuff...although dropping him and then performing a mass sacrifice can be fun.
But this guy just makes me grin every time I see him. Gotta give props for that.

I'm thinking Goblin Assault
and Tremor.

Sadly, it costs 6. Makes me wish his ability could also hit creatures for crazy chain-reactions. At uncommon, he's alright the way he is, but {4}{R} would have turned him into a great card.
On the bright side, he has potential. Unlike many cards, if he gets out, he has potential to do a truly ridiculous amount of damage, so at least he's exciting to play.

It's really annoying when people call cards like this bad because of their power/toughness to mana cost ratio. There is more to creatures than just that! Obviously, if you are using Rage Thrower, you aren't planning on attacking like crazy with it. You should think of this card less like "its ability is nice but it's too small for its cost," and more like "if its body is too inefficient for it to be used as a good attacker, maybe I could find a way to use its ability to great effect."
