perhaps i'm wrong, but i feel like making this R wouldn't have been overpowered. it still would take 3 turns to deal 3 damage, it would be sorcery-speed, and it couldn't target creatures. and the other player would have all those turns to figure out a way to remove it. as it is, i fear it won't see much play.

Guess what? The damage can be redirected to planeswalkers. Suddenly the card looks a lot better.

To date, there have been exactly three Magic cards with the word "pierce" in the name: one in each of the latest three blocks.
The more you know!

Opponent: "Ha! 1 life per turn? Pathetic."
20 turns later...
"Fiddlesticks."

And I, of ten last places
Must be the one who starts
To draft a new reality
Curse of the Pierced Heart
Curse of the Pierced Heart
E.M. Gist is the artist
Reflects pain in his art
Forge inevitability
Curse of the Pierced Heart
Yeah, it's Curse of the Pierced Heart
Pro players like Anderson
They all think they're smart
"It's just a triviality..."
Curse of the Pierced Heart
Yeah, it's Curse of the Pierced Heart
It can beat a Captain, yes
Turn two is the start
Pinging into destiny
Curse of the Pierced Heart
Curse of the Pierced Heart x7
Curse of your pierced heart.

You can't think strictly of what red usually does. This card does not fit the general "red spell to the face mantra"
This is slow, but can deal a grave amount of damage in the course of the game. What it does is give red in Innistrad some reach for long games. This is the kind of thing you build into a black/red/green ramp build. Or build into a R/B control build.
For many games this becomes unstoppable damage. Wen you start racking 8 points of damage of a spell you only invested 2 mana in it's always going to be a great card.

Its not that great. It's only use in my opinion is to annoy your opponent enough to waste a removal spell.
