He didn't suggest spirit link for massive life gain, he suggested it because it's an easy way to make it so you get more life gain triggers from his attacks. Spirit link with this guy is basically curiosity where you don't have to hit a player, and he has doublestrike. Putting 4 of them on him means you draw 10 cards if he hits with both of his attacks.

This card was so beautiful for me. When I first started playing last december (2012, if this is being read in the future) I got a starter kit, and inside the dark ascension pack was this beauty. somewhere in the box was a drogskol captain and a few other anthemy spirits, so the first deck i put together was a spirit deck.
now the reason I have to appreciate this card is this - its appeal to both new players and experienced players. when i first started, i said "holy crap, a 3/5 double strike lifelink!" now, i pick up this card again, and go "holy crap, draw a card every time I gain life!" I love design like that. I think wizards needs to make more cards like this, because it has provided me with a card that I could fall in love with as a new player, and still enjoy as an experienced player, and that's all for its abilities!
Mind you it is overcosted for competitive decks for something that most likely just gets removed before it does anything. But amongst my friends it does fairly we... (see all)

Pristine Talisman.
Helps ramp him out and turns into draw engine.

First note that I'm pretty much a Spike myself, so what I write below applies only to competitive Standard.
This is a line in the cmc beyond which the "dies to removal" argument begins to apply, and I believe it lies somewhere between five and seven mana. Of course, anyone writing Tarmogoyf off because it dies to removal is plain stupid. The five drops Baneslayer Angel and Kalonian Hydra saw Standard play despite not having any form of protection against removal spells. At six mana you start to want something that either generates a huge effect right off the bat (Aurelia, Garruk, Caller of Beasts, M11 Titans) or is hard to remove (Aetherling, Deadbridge Chant). At seven mana, you definitely want to do one of the above really well, preferrably both - just being an excellent creature by itself is no longer enough. A good seven mana creature i... (see all)

Combo with Horizon Chimera to draw your entire deck. What you do from there is up to you.

Well it says it seeks out other spirits to hoard in its eternal prison, which leads me to believe it is a spirit which somehow got sucked into a grafdiggers cage and animated, now absorbing spirits into it from which they can't escape. I suppose it explains the lifelink....
....yeah, I don't understand it either.

I just got to play him today in an EDH match using Grand Arbiter Augustin IV as my general. He came down for five on turn five; and, luckily for me, my opponents didn't have any removal in their hands because, you know, he practically dies to everything. Next turn I was able to protect him with Elgaud Shieldmate. One of the few games I won tonight.
Personally, I like the card. It has great art, it's unique, and has an appropriate cost. What's not to like?
