It's not just you, pretty much anything is better than Rod of Ruin, in fact, nothing at all is better than Rod of Ruin. I would go as far as to say that having Serrated Arrows shoved up your Oblivion Ring would be better than Rod of Ruin.
This is such a great card, goes with anything that has Deathtouch, Wither, Infect or any other "when this creature deals damage" effect. A definate 5/5 for the endless utility of it.

The equip cost is a bit high, but it is offset by the low casting cost, tim ability outside of red, and the beating this already is in a deathtouch deck. As it is, you can still take out two creatures per turn with just two deathtouchers and

Don't underestimate this card. It makes some pretty useful combos:
This + Vedalken Heretic= Draw a card
This + Deadly Recluse / Thornweald Archer= Projected deathtouch
This + Warren Instigator = Play a goblin from your hand without playing its mana cost
This + Hunting Cheetah= search for a forest card
This + Hypnotic Specter= Opponent discards a card randomly
If your deck includes green, then add instill energy to double the effect ^_^
