this is the demon deck's answer to baneslayer angel,

me: your bane slayer is pro all my creature?
opponent: yes it is, it can block them all day with its lifelink, first strike and flying
me: I see, *cast Mark of the Oni on Baneslayer*
opponent: ouch

At worst its Black Threaten. At best its Black Mind Control for 3 CMC.

3/5 I can someday see an Unglued card being name Mark of the Oni-chan, LOL but that is the Otaku part of me. Creature steal in Black is great along with the prerequisite makes it less reliable than Blue. Add to that, that demons isn't a very common creature type (oustide of Kamigawa) then this card is usually used to remove a potential blocker, not bad for 3 mana.

The problem with this card is that Abyssal Persecutor is the lowest coast playable demon and I am not even sure he works in demon decks despite its 3 mana coast it is still kind of a late game card 2/5.

Everyone (save for a few) is focusing solely on the one sentence of this card. This can simply be used as a color shifted Threaten/Act of Treason (minus the untap/haste). And how do we break those cards? Sacrifice effects! And Black has SO MANY more of those than Red. The Demon line is actually a benefit, not a downside. I read this card as:

Mark of the Oni 2Black
Sorcery
Gain control of target creature until end of turn. If you control a Demon, gain control of target creature for as long as you control a Demon instead.

Of course, there are some technial differences, but you get my point. I don't like defending many of Kamigawa's cards, but they did pretty good on this one.
