And Twiddle allows you to untap a permanent instead, while Gigadrowse doesn't. Flexibility = goodness.

the copy's do count as different spells and may be countered as such. and yes they trigger storm...

To "play" a card means to cast a spell, or to use the "play a land" action. Replicate does neither: It puts the copies directly onto the stack without ever actually casting them. That's why it doesn't contribute to storm.
