Such an awesome art by rk post on a rather uninteresting creature ... what a shame :(

Maybe I'm spoiled by other card but this one has never really impressed me. I know it's purpose in limited, anti-persist. But Black is the king of kill spells. Why waste a slot when you can just run more direct kills spells which would be more versatile than "Counter target persist ability." As a creature, yeah, it's not bad for french vanilla, but playing it completely negates it's purpose in your deck. Once on the field, you can't pay it's cost. An added sac clause would have been better in my opinion.

I like the surprise effect of zero cost abilities from your hand. Also, it's nigh uncounter-ability. But it's effect seems limited at best. By that I mean playable in limited, where all forms of removal shine, no matter how bad. But not a first draft pick by any means.

Edit: Completely forgot Retrace in limited. Still, I stand by my opinion.

There is scarcely something more satisfying in the world of Magic than using Faerie Macabre in response to Exhume.

As others have mentioned, the graveyard hate is an activated ability rather than a spell, so it cannot be counter spelled. Another thing that is really nice about this form of graveyard hate is that it cannot be hit by Duress. The other nice things is that graveyard based decks often sideboard into non-graveyard based and this still has value in those cases. For example, Oops often sideboards into Belcher and Reanimator often sideboards into Show and Tell.
