I'm running a modern tezzeret affinity deck that's taking a more controlly route and I have to say, playing this guy and throwing out Shrapnel Blast before his ability resolves feels SO good.

Decent card, survives a lot of 2cmc removal instants.... I'd rather have thoughtseize, inquisition or castigate as you probably won't be attacking with this guy often...

If running him in zombies, consider carrion feeder as a way to perma-exile the card in their hand. It'll usually be worth it; since you'll still be swinging for 2 that turn with the feeder, and you can always just recur this guy and do it again.
Another fun card to play with is Phyrexian Tower. Drop him T2 with a little acceleration, then eat him in response to his first ability to get your double black while exiling their card.
However, this guy is good enough without tricks to get the job done.
