It's funny, because if this were to attack, it would be about as useful as a manatee.

Next, on the DeVanilla project, where we take overcosted vanilla cards, and inspire them with unique mechanics.

For Coral Merfolk, I'd give:
When Coral Merfolk comes into play, each player reveals the top card of his or her library. For each Island or Merfolk card revealed this way, put a +1/+1 counter on Coral Merfolk.

I recently had the pleasure of beating down a Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker with this guy shortly after enchanting it with Illusionary Armor. Needless to say, the dude piloting that +$600 Grixis deck wasn't impressed.

What people often forget about a card like Coral Merfolk is that even though it's far worse than most alternatives, it's still meeting the baseline for a card at that CMC. Using it isn't going to ruin your deck, it's just not going to bring anything spectacular to the table. A 2/1 is capable of trading well in combat, and it can eat removal as well as any Rare or Mythic.

Of course a card like this won't see constructed play, but that clearly wasn't the purpose of printing Coral Merfolk in the first place. By placing this card at Common rarity, the limited format is able to remain healthy and balanced for everybody to enjoy. Can you imagine trying to draft in a format where every 2-Drop was a chase rare? Making a mana curve would be ... (see all)
