Obelisk of Grixis can be played on the same turn as a land, and it's an artifact, which is a boon all to itself.
But yeah, if you're playing grixis, use this card instead of the Obelisk. It doesn't screw you over if you get it instead of basic lands.

I absolutely love this land. Grixis has so many awesome three-color fatties, like Blood Tyrant or my namesake.

These lands are all awesome. Perfect for wedge commander decks. Also good if in a regular deck you want only two of the colors but can't afford those lands that tap for a color and cause a point of damage.

They say that a land can be done as an artifact with mana cost of 2.
Obelisk of Grixis costs 3 because it doesn't come into play tapped. No one is strictly better or worse than the other...
I think it's up to you, which should go into your deck. If you want to accelerate, use the Obelisk. If you want to have a slower but more steady deck, use the Necropolis. Personally, I prefer the Necropolis, because I don't want to spend my third turn playing only an artifact, and because an artifact takes always a slot where I could put an useful spell...
A land that can give you 3 kind of mana and its only drawback is that it comes into play tappes is not something that you see everyday...

Castle Sengir comes into play untapped, but it's quite annoying to use... Having to spend 3 mana to have a Blue or Red isn't handy at all!

Crosis's Catacombs comes into play untapped, which is good, but you have to bouce another land. Goo... (see all)
