I'm pretty sure the flavor text on this printing is a reference to how it was replaced with shock for a while
"a fierce energy he'd never thought to see again"

This is a little odd. Back in 1994 - 1995, we didn't consider this card "broken". Sure, it is an awesome card, but then again this card WAS the color red, just like "Dark Ritual" WAS the color black. This may sound obscene, but I don't think "Lightning Bolt" should have gone out of print for such a long time. Magic lost alot of it's appeal for me (and many of my friends) when "Lightning Bolt" turned into "Shock", "Hill Giant" became "Superinsectwarrior of Ghribnokthamwab" and "Roc of Kher Ridges" got axed or turned into another generic unpronouncable card. Call us strange, but we considered red the color of mountains, earth, fire and chaos. This means giants, elementals, fireballs, lightning bolts, ogres, orcs, goblins, rocs and even raging rivers.
I'm glad MTG tries to return to form a little and bring each color's specific flavor back. Lightning Bolt should never have gone out of print, just like blue needs the basic "Counterspell" back.
5 colors, each unique and it's on own flavo... (see all)

This card made me go Sligh when I started playing Magic for so many reasons, including those already stated by my fellow players. And the flavor text... wow... what else can I say? I'm just happy to say "bolt you for three" again. I just hope it stays for a while this time around.

This card is one of the legendary spells of early Magic that apparently is still a valid card today, and I'll be curious to see how Lightning Bolt makes out in the new format.

5/5, great card. perfect when you drop a spell and have that 1 mana left over, why not do 3 more damage? 3 times as much damage as casting cost, the best ratio available.

Must...not...put...in...deck... Just kidding, it's a great card. Oh, and lightning strikes several times in one spot.

It's a fantastic burn card. As far as the best, that depends on the deck. I would argue that Lightning Axe is better for the particular deck that I'm building, that being a hellbent/madness themed deck. In that case, Lightning Axe is absolutely FANTASTIC: 5 damage AND I get to discard a card for 1 mana. FAR better than Lightning Bolt. But in most other situations, yeah, I'd agree that Lightning Bolt is significantly better.

My Red-burn deck is back! Never thought Wizards would make the mistake of bringing THIS card back...what's next, Channel?
