Great loss of life for cards should be red. Black should prefer a slow and painful death for your enemies, not a fast one for yourself.

Dark Confidant is better which you can remove if you're ouching too much with it on the battlefield. Phyrexian Arena is still the best(on my opinion).

As mdakw576 stated, either Phyrexian Arena or Dark Confidant are normally preferable to this card.

When it worked it worked very well. Made a funky life gain/card draw beatdown deck. Died from Excommunicate once though...
