5/5 of course... but the lack of an Essence Scatter with all these Eldrazi running amuk makes Standard mono-blue a bit lopsided. Then again, there's Mana Leak, Cancel, Mindbreak Trap, Deprive... Then again, there's plenty of handy bounce cards (Into The Roil and Unsummon) to handle creatures with now, not to mention Rite of Replication or Volition Reins to take advantage of your opponent's creatures... Couldn't play Standard without 4 of these in every Blue deck I make to keep those nasty Lightning Bolts, Duresses, Planeswalkers, Mimic Vats... I've yet to see a deck that runs nothing but creatures, so you'll never find yourself anything but assured by drawing into a trusty Negate. 5/5, for being t... (see all)

Against all the standard ramp, I'd call this a staple....

I love the elegance of Negate - Past cards like Envelop, Flash Counter and Annul never excited me, since they sit dead in your hand a fair amount of time. Negate is perfectly costed, and it can almost always be cast at one point or another. I wouldn't be surprised if Negate stays in core sets for as long as (functional) Llanowar Elves stay.

i've played with every counterspell except rewind and counterbore, and i gotta tell ya - this is simply the best counterspell in the entire game. Although there are definitely a few VERY close seconds.
-It costs 1U so splashable and very efficiently costed.
-"Counter target noncreature spell". Unconditional stop for a noncreature spell for just 1U. Blue can spend all day playing with creatures with many many different cards but they do not do so great against noncreature permanents. Negate is the best for stopping those threats before they get a chance to etb keeping you safe from whatever the hell it happened to be, giving you more time to do what a blue mage thinks needs to be done.
-No tricks or extra payments or anything of that sort either, which makes it one of the easiest to use. (not that i don't enjoy complicated cards)
-Of course there are those who would scream at me and call me stupid and a bad player and blah blah blah about ... (see all)

Best overall counter in Standard/Extended. For other formats I think it comes a little short of Mana Drain, Force of Will and maybe even the basic Counterspell (in a multi heavy environment)...but those are all very good cards.

Breaking News: Cheap, conditional counters are awesome. Wizards had to kill Counterspell to get this into people's heads.
With blue's card advantage and filtering, having four of this, four Remove Soul and four Mana Leak is equivalent to having 12 copies of Counterspell in your deck...that cost 1U. All you have to do is get the right one at the right time, but again, this is blue we're talking about.

Counter target Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
Mine costed $.05. How much did yours?

Best counter in standard and extended, no doubt about it and easy to splash

This is a very solid card. Not amazing, but solid.
While cards like cancel are more flexible in the sense that they can stop almost any spell. You should never underestimate a card like negate that only requires that you have two mana open to shut down cards like wrath of god, fireball, and traumatize.
