Is it me, or does that orb in his hand look like a miniature of the orb in Merciless Eviction?
Actually that's made me see both cards completely differently. Originally I thought he was stopping mid battle to play with his little experiment. Now I'm starting to think that he noticed the big orb from Merciless Eviction before anyone else did, when the spell was first cast, and was trying to figure out what it was going to do. Unfortunately, he couldn't figure out a way to stop it in time...

@ DarthParallax: This guy could be Warmachine given the big cannon on his shoulder. Now we have both Ironman (Crosis's Attendant) and his buddy Warmachine (this guy). Maybe Rescue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_Potts) would be Izzet Staticaster?
