I like the flavor here: It gets more and more complex, powerful, and unwieldly, until the artificer doesn't have enough power to run the whole thing.
Then, in frustration, he flings it at his opponent as a misshapen myr cannonball.

ratrase, if it were a 0/0 you'd have the dilemma of cast it early and it'd die instantly, or cast it late and it'd die instantly. Did you mean 0/1?

This card is FAR too expensive at 5! It's only a 2/2, and the +1/+1 counters won't even start to go onto it for another turn! Unless you use another spell to get this artifact creature out on turn 2 or 3, it's pointless. Besides, if I'm going to go to the trouble of playing a spell to put any artifact or creature onto the battlefield, I'd choose something much more useful than this one.
It's too bad, though, because it's an interesting idea for a card, just far too expensive. If the card had cost 3 or 4 mana, or if the creature were a 3/3, then you'd have a good card!

Mirrodin had broken cards and then it had...
It's like they were starting on a good concept in development but then got distracted while screwing the the affinity cards and this just got printed, still only half developed.
This would have been sweet as a cost 0/0 and, dare I say, Modular 1? Then the downside would have been totally justified. You could even change it to an upkeep/sac cost. So you could move the counters if you wanted at beginning of your upkeep or if you didn't have the to pay. Sort of a neat version of cumulative upkeep.

Despite possible use with other cards, {{5}} is far too high. It wouldn't even have needed the drawback at that cost.
Instead of combining it with Acbound Fiend i'd rather use Energy Chamber instead.
This would have been an interesting card for {{3}}, but like this it's rather useless.

My first thought was that it might be useful with the Spike creature type.

This is more useful than you might think; just add an Arcbound Fiend. By itself it's good for a window of maybe 3 or 4 turns, after that it just kind of hulks in a corner. Worth a second look in some decks.

Can you say Braid of Fire?

If it was a 0/0 for 2 it would have been perfect imo. That way you would have the dilemma of dropping it early but risk not having enough mana to block/atack with it, or drop it later and having it grow to slow to be efficient.
Heck, compared to Steel Overseer, this should have to be a 0/0 for 1 to be worth playing.

A cool concept, but holy hell this is bad! It was even printed in the same set as the sliths!
