At it's just too expensive.
Moreover, consider that if you want to attack with this creature you have to invest most of your mana, and so you can't play other spells that turn...

Combine it with Cauldron of Souls and other ways of giving it Persist and it becomes very persistent indeed! Also great to combine with Harbinger of Night, Midnight Banshee and Soul Snuffers.

You shouldn't ever be using it, no, but... Spike Cannibal gives you a nice reset button, I guess.
You could also just go all out, stacking Corpsejack Menaces and Doubling Seasons before unleashing with a timely Fling or Dismantle (onto Darksteel Reactor? I dunno.)

I guess this prototype was a failure.

Good idea, bad card.
Even as a 2/2 for three mana, it wouldn't be good. For five mana... bah. They should have given it some additional ability, such as.. "when Myr Prototype dies, it deals X damage to each creature and player, where X is the number of counters on it".

Nope.
Braid of Fire gives you mana during your upkeep. Myr Prototype requires the mana during the declare attackers step. It's long gone by then (remember, mana pools empty and the end of steps and phases.)
