I think we can fix this. He's "eager" right? So let's just slap on First Strike and then you get this nice little cycle of one drops in each color that have an evergreen ability.
W: Eager Cadet - 1/1 - First Strike
G: Llanowar Elves - 1/1 - Tap for F
R: Raging Goblin - 1/1 - Haste
B: Plague Beatle - 1/1 - Swampwalk *
U: Fugitive Wizard - 1/1 - Shroud**
*Yes, Swampwalk so it's not really evergreen but whenever there's a cycle with basic abilities black always gets stuck with swampwalk. In today's game, I'd have it have deathtouch which, in my opinion, fits the name "plague beatle" better than swampwalk.
**Yes, Fugitive Wizard doesn't have an ability, but its bifrucated name fits the cycle, as does its cost and 1/1 -ness. And giving him Shroud fits his flavor.

The epitome of a newbie card. It's simple and it's easy to play. It's also bad, to encourage the player to get better cards when (s)he's ready to deal with more complex abilities, or in some cases non-matching power/toughness.
Also, the art is much worse than the art from 7th and 8th editions. Too bad they changed it back.

Serra Ascendant - Lifelink, and if controller has 30+ life, gains +5/+5 and Flying (fair enough, it IS broken in 2HG)
Student of Warfare - Can be leveled up to a 4/4 with Double Strike
Plague Beetle - Swampwalk
Fugitive Wizard - Shroud
Ardent Recruit - Gains +2/+2 with Metalcraft
Merfolk Spy - Islandwalk, defending player reveals random card from hand upon combat damage
Vedalken Certarch - Can be tapped to tap target artifact/creature/land with Metalcraft
Copperhorn Scout - Untaps each other creature you control when it attacks
Joraga Treespeaker - Can be leveled up to 1/4 which gives all of your creatures "Tap to add 2 Green to your mana pool."
Ezuri's Archers - 1/2 which gains +3/0 when blocking a flier for that turn
Flayer's Husk - Its CMC can be paid with any colour, plus it's a Living Weapon so if the token dies it an... (see all)

Strictly worse than the following white one drops in the same format:
Elite Vanguard 2/1
Midnight Duelist 1/2 AND pro vampires
Hada Freeblade Pumped by other Allies.
Champion of the Parish Pumped by any other human.
Doomed Traveler Replaces itself with an evasive attacker.
Gideon's Lawkeeper Taps target creature.
Loyal Sentry Trades with whatever it blocks.
Ardent Recruit 3/3 with Metalcraft.
Infantry Veteran Temp pump on an attacking creature.
Honor Guard Can increase its toughness for W.
Keep in mind, these are strictly better in EVERY sense, keeping in mind the human and soldier subtypes. If you leave room for different subtypes in the W drop position, and this list easily triples in size.
