They changed Lycanthropes (Lesser Werewolf, Greater Werewolf) into Human Wolf as well, so why not this specimen?
According to Mythology, a Cóckatrice is a chimera of a two-legged dragon with a rooster's head, so that would make it Dragon Bird. Which is a pretty rad type combination.
Then again, they usually keep quirky types for a reason. (At least since the Grand Creature Type Update).
For example, Kavu could be Lizard Beasts, Homarids could be Crabs, and Cephalids could Octopuses instead.
Although, Kavu aside, seeing how all other humanoid, animal-based species don't get a seperate type either, i actually think they shouldn't have a seperate type: There's literally an example for every major animal species: We have Aven (Birds), Nantuko (Insects), Leonin (Cats), autoc... (see all)

The way the bestiaries had it, the basilisk/***atrice were the result of a rooster's egg (yes, you read that correctly) being incubated non-stop by a toad. The name "***atrice" may in some way be related to the egg element; originally, it was just "basilisk". That one means "little king", because it was held to be the king of serpents, looking like a small viper with a white crest. So I'd guess that when the rooster's egg bit came up, that's when the basilisk/***atrice began to sport feathers.
Note, by the way, that the bestiaries didn't think the gaze or breath of the basilisk/***atrice killed by petrification. Rather, it was by inducing a severe case of poisoning. How bad? The basilisk's breath was supposed to kill EVERYTHING in a radius of a few miles except the rue plant (the Sahara Desert? Their doing.), and could even make rocks EXPLODE. That latter may have to do with the idea that serpent venom was incendiary in some way, simply because snakebite victims felt a burn... (see all)
